Davy: Wexford should’ve got more All-Star nominations’

- Donnchadh Boyle

WEXFORD boss Davy Fitzgerald insists his side should have received more All-Star nominations when the 45-strong list was announced last week.

After a season that saw them secure a Leinster title for the first time since 2004, Wexford picked up eight nominations with Liam Ryan, Matthew O’Hanlon, Paudie Foley, Diarmuid O’Keeffe, Lee Chin, Conor McDonald, Rory O’Connor and Kevin Foley chosen.

However, Fitzgerald insisted the county deserved at least three more. All-Ireland champions Tipperary picked up 11 nominations with Limerick and Kilkenny next on the list with nine.

“I really believe we should have received at least three more,” Fitzgerald said.

Unlucky

“I believe that Liam Óg McGovern, for his huge work-rate alone, Shaun Murphy and Mark Fanning, were very, very unlucky not to have been included.

“When you look at it Kilkenny received nine, and won no silverware. Limerick also have nine. So I believe we should have had more,” he said.

The final selection of 15 players will be made later this month and those included will be honoured at a banquet in Dublin on Friday, November 1.

Fitzgerald finally brought an end to speculation regarding his future as Wexford boss last week when he signed on for a further two years.

Preparation for 2020 is already well under way with the county set to release a DVD chronicling his last three years in charge, while a corporate dinner will also be hosted in the near future.

“We are also organising a corporate dinner. On the night we will be presenting the Leinster senior hurling championship medals. We are working on this at the moment.”
