Bohs Wright on cue to maintain pressure on Dundalk

- Denis Hurley

BOHEMIANS moved to within a point of second-placed Dundalk in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as Andre Wright struck what proved to be a fourth-minute winner at Turner’s Cross last evening.

With the Lilywhites set to visit Dalymount Park next Friday, Bohs will go into that game in confident form as they were full value for the three points here, a result that leaves Cork City bottom of the table after the first round of fixtures since the restart of domestic football.

Bohs were on top for much of the game and asserted their superiority from the off. Danny Grant, who was lively on the left flank throughout, came in towards the centre and curled a shot goalwards, with Mark McNulty palming away only for Wright to react quicker than the home defence to shoot home.

The Gypsies looked to push on after that and defender Dan Casey, who spent 2019 with City, twice went close, sending a low free-kick wide and then having a header off target from a JJ Lunney corner. Cork failed to create anything clear-cut in the opening half, though Cian Murphy almost got on the end of a McNulty goal-kick only for Anto Breslin to defend well.

On the resumption, Bohs continued to look likelier to score the game’s second goal and Wright and Grant both missed good chances. On 62 minutes, though, Murphy was unlucky not to make it 1-1 as he charged down a clearance but the ball went just over, rather than under, the crossbar.

Lunney and Grant both tested McNulty and Wright had a shot which was just outside the post. The additions of Dáire O’Connor and Cory Galvin gave City a bit more of an attacking threat and O’Connor gave Deshane Dalling a half-chance in injury-time but the winger couldn’t make clean contact and Bohs held on.

CORK CITY – McNulty; Kargbo, Olowu, Bennett, K O’Connor; Coleman, Ochieng, Byrne (Galvin 72); McGlade (D O’Connor 67), Murphy, Dalling.

BOHEMIANS – McGuinness; Lyons, Cornwall, Casey, Breslin; Buckley, Lunney; Twardek, Devoy (Ward 85), Grant; Wright (Corcoran 85).

REF – S Grant (Wexford).
