Making headlines: A year’s subscription to Independent.ie for Annie’s ‘young’ dad

- David Power

SHE risked damage to the print industry with her comments on The Late Late Toy Show that her dad wasn’t “that old” to buy a newspaper.

But in truth, Annie O’Brien’s father, Jimmy, was up first thing on Saturday morning buying newspapers to savour the coverage of the show.

“I sped out of the hotel at half six or a quarter to seven in the morning to pick up the papers,” Jimmy said.

“I did it just to prove that

I do buy newspapers, but I get more of my news online now.”

Now he won’t have to head for the newsagents so often – as Independent.ie is treating Annie’s father to a year’s free digital subscription. It means he can enjoy all the content from Independent titles, and premium content from a host of talented writers.

“I’m delighted with this as it will be much better than just looking things up on my phone,” Jimmy said.

A staunch Leeds, Shelbourne and Dubs fan, he said he particularly enjoyed the sports coverage on Independent.ie.

‘It’s great to have access to the premium content as I love reading about GAA and soccer,” Jimmy said.

Annie’s quip about her father not being old enough to pick up the papers in the morning created much commentary on social media.

Some journalists joked that it had caused them to question their career choices.

The nine-year-old from Tullamore had some memorable exchanges with host Ryan Tubridy who was impressed with her musical favourites including Metallica, AC/DC, Bob Marley and Green Day.

Annie said she made the comment as it was more her grandparents’ generation who pop to the shops for a newspaper.

“It just came into my head. I know Ryan gets the newspapers and my dad is around his age,” Annie said. At their home in Tullamore, Jimmy quickly added that he was actually a little younger than Tubridy.
