Treaty boost with Gillane set for a swift return to training

- Colm Keys

LIMERICK’S Aaron Gillane is on course to be ready to play his part in the All-Ireland hurling final on Sunday week after being released from hospital yesterday morning.

Gillane felt unwell after Sunday’s semi-final and was kept in overnight after suffering bruising and subsequent discomfort in his midriff area.

The Patrickswell man had been involved in a number of hard collisions that were a feature of their semi-final win against Galway.

But Limerick sources are confident that he will be able to resume training later in the week and will plan for the decider against Waterford without any doubt hanging over his participation.

Meanwhile, Gearóid Hegarty is unlikely to face any retrospective charge for his chop across Joe Canning’s back with his hurl near the end of the first half of Sunday’s game.

Hegarty was in inspired form for Limerick but sailed close to the wind and a potential red card for dangerous use of the hurl when he connected with Canning.

The officials missed it but it is believed that the Central Competitions Controls Committee (CCCC), who examine these matters, are unlikely to pursue any case against Hegarty now.

Canning was released from the Mater Hospital late on Sunday night having been stretchered off the field with a suspected concussion after a collision with his colleague Joseph Cooney. He was recovering at home yesterday.

Meanwhile, Limerick and Waterford will be able to bring their full squads to the final after the Government relaxed restrictions around entry in Level 3 of the ‘Living with Covid’ plan.
