Let it Snow

- PW

(Amazon, iTunes, Sky, 86mins)

In this cheerfully nasty horror from Ukrainian writer/director Stanislav Kapralov, a sense of humour and tense atmospherics overcome the shortcomings of a predictable plot.

An American couple called Max (Alex Hafner) and Mia (Ivanna Sakhno) have arrived in a quiet Caucasian ski resort for a romantic break. They’re free-riding snowboarders and have come to Georgia to try out a legendary peak called the Black Ridge.

What they don’t know is that a local girl died three years ago after being hit by a hitand-run snowboarder and since then, some strange things have been happening up on the Ridge. Mia has misgivings about going up there, especially after talking to a creepy, crucifix-obsessed hotel concierge (Tinatin Dalakishvili), but Max is an arrogant twit, so off to the Black Ridge they go.

There they hear a ghost story, get lost in fog and discover to their horror that they’re being chased by a masked figure on a Skidoo. Let It Snow’s ending will surprise no one, but Kapralov and his cast have a lot of fun getting there, and Sakhno suffers eloquently as the surprisingly dogged Mia.
