Woman’s lawsuit against McGregor over alleged assault delayed

- SHANE PHELAN

The hearing of a woman’s multi-millioneuro civil damages claim against mixed martial arts (MMA) star Conor McGregor, in which she alleges she suffered personal injuries as a result of an assault, has been delayed.

The case had been scheduled to go before a High Court jury on the week starting April 23.

However, that date was this week vacated by Mr Justice Alexander Owens following an application from Mr McGregor’s legal team.

The matter was put back, with the agreement of the woman’s legal team, to a jury callover on May 30, at which point it should be given a new hearing date.

A trial is now likely to be listed for hearing in late June or early July.

The lawsuit against McGregor (35) relates to events alleged to have taken place at a Dublin hotel in 2018. The case was initiated in 2021.

McGregor has denied any wrongdoing and has filed a full defence. The details of the woman’s claim have yet to be outlined in open court.

However, it is known the matter was previously the subject of a garda investigation, after which the Director of Public Prosecutions decided there should be no prosecution.

Hearings held to date in the case have been largely procedural.

In 2022, the High Court made orders for the discovery of material gathered as part of the garda probe.

Under the terms of the orders, gardaí were to disclose statements made to them, as well as any results of medical toxicology, technical or forensic analysis generated during the investigation.

The disclosure of CCTV stills or photographs taken from various locations in Dublin was also ordered.

These included images from the exterior of the Goat Bar and Grill, a hair salon, an in-taxi camera, and from the Beacon Hotel and its surrounds taken between the evening of December 8 and 8am on December 10, 2018. Orders were also made for the disclosure of data from mobile phones interrogated in the course of the investigation.

A separate lawsuit, a smaller claim for personal injuries, was also filed in 2021 by the woman’s mother. However, that case has yet to be progressed to trial.

An associate of Mr McGregor is named as a co-defendant in both lawsuits.

Both women are being represented by Coleman Legal, while McGregor’s solicitors are Michael J Staines & Company.
