Jenkins leads Éanna to league final triumph

- BARRY LENNON

Seán Jenkins led Éanna to the club’s first Super League title by hitting 24 points in their 93-61 final triumph over Killester at the National Basketball Arena.

The 24-year-old Corkman was duly awarded the MVP for the southside Dublin club who dominated their northside counterparts from start to finish.

“This is what we’ve been working for, whether it was this (Super League) or the cup, I didn’t really care which one it was, as long as we got something in the door,” said Éanna head coach Darren McGovern.

Jenkins and Josh Wilson made excellent starts with 14 and 12 points respectively, establishing a 31-21 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Éanna’s lead would grow to 16 points with the scoreline at 49-33 lead by half-time.

Killester’s Paul Dick bowed out early in the fourth quarter after he picked up his fifth foul, putting paid to hopes of completing a club treble.

Their women’s team did complete the double beforehand however, when they beat Waterford Wildcats 75-50 to claim the Champions Trophy after their Super League success last month.

Their American guard Jiselle Thomas led the scorers with 16 points but it was Ireland international star Claire Melia who was awarded MVP.

The Kildare woman’s trademark steeliness helped put Killester ahead 48-18 at half-time, and the Dubliners held firm from there to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet.

“Thrilled with our performance, first half was so much fun, they were always going to bite back and show us really what they’re really made of and they did themselves proud in the second half, delighted with the win,” said team captain Michelle Clarke.
