Tributes paid to ‘true gentlemen’
Local Independent councillor Declan Bree said: “Sligo is stunned today.”
Speaking to the Irish Sunday Mirror he revealed Sonny and Sean are from a large and very popular family.
Mr Bree added: “The community is shocked.
“We are trying to come to terms with the news. It’s just hard to believe.
“Sonny and Sean were from a hugely respected local family and the community will certainly rally around Eoin and Anne-marie Mccartney
Fans outside ground them in solidarity.” Cllr Bree said the incident occurred just a street away from his home.
Tributes for the father and son have been posted on social media as friends, family and neighbours come to terms with the devastating news.
One comment read: “It’s so sad father and son to go like this. Rip lads.”
Another person wrote: “Very sad may they both rest in peace and hope their families can find the strength to get through it.”
Six other people were rescued from other apartments in the block and treated for smoke inhalation.
Gardai are still investigating the blaze which they are not treating as suspicious at this stage.
