Kieron said: “It meant Claire, who was still working as a manager with Dunnes Stores at the time, had to give up her job and come into the Claire & husband Kieron business full-time. I was in a wheelchair for over a year. I used to sit with the chopping board on my lap and give it to Claire and she would put the ingredients in the pot.
“She’d pass a bit back down to me to taste and that was how we managed.” The full range of products are available at 200 Supervalu stores as well as 150 independent shops and they’ve just gone on sale at Centra.
The latest unusual flavours include raspberry and tiramisu and Irish whiskey marmalade but their rhubarb and custard jam remains the top seller.
Kieron said: “Everyone loves the rhubarb and custard because it tastes exactly like the sweets from when you were a child.
“I keep a notebook beside the bed and when I get a new idea for a flavour combination I write it down.”
The Morans pitch for €40,000 in return for a 10% share in their company but they face competition from three other entrepreneurs with products ranging from a heating device to teaching aids.
