- BY JON HERSKOVITZ

A POLICE officer has been charged with murder over the shooting of a black 15-year-old boy, a lawyer for the teen’s family said.

Jordan Edwards had left a party and was in a car moving away from the officer when he allegedly opened fire.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver.

The statement from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department was posted on Twitter by a reporter for television station WFAA.

Oliver was fired by the force of the Dallas police department earlier this week over alleged policy violations.

The shooting took place

Jordan Edwards in a largely black and Hispanic neighbourhood.

It has stoked simmering tensions of perceived racial bias in US policing.

The Balch Springs Police Department and a lawyer representing Oliver were not available for comment.

High school student Jordan has been described by his family as a stand-out scholar and athlete.

He was struck by a bullet to the head and died.
