Pomp romp way to title

- By CHRIS HATHERALL at Fratton Park

PORTSMOUTH are in dreamland after they hit Cheltenham for six and went from third to first to win the League Two title.

Inspired by two-goal Kal Naismith, Paul Cook’s side romped to victory and set off mad celebrations on the south coast.

Pompey began the day in third needing Doncaster and Plymouth to slip up to stand a chance of being crowned champions.

And by the end the noise levels at Fratton Park were off the scale.

FA Cup winners in 2008, Portsmouth have since tumbled from the Premier League to the basement in record time.

They left administration in 2013, thanks to a deal to purchase the club by the Pompey Supporters Trust – and now League One is beckoning. The future promises to be even brighter if Michael Eisner, a former chief executive at Disney, proves to be a true white knight.

He met the Pompey Supporters Trust last week after offering £5.67million to buy the club, and talks are ongoing.

“Whatever happened this evening we knew we’d already achieved the objective we had at the start of the season – to win promotion,” said Cook.

They went ahead after 13 minutes when Daniel O’shaughnessy diverted Enda Stevens’ cross into his own net.

Kyle Bennett made it 2-0 with a solo run and a deflected shot, Naismith scored a third and Jamal Lowe added the fourth.

Gareth Evans’ penalty, made it 5-0 and Cheltenham’s consolation through James Dayton was forgotten as Naismith lashed in a sixth.
