Simon stands firm in face of rival’s support
FINE Gael TD Simon Coveney insisted he’s staying in the leadership race last night despite growing support for his rival.
Reports yesterday indicated the Housing Minister was considering his position in the battle to succeed Enda Kenny.
However, he told a packed rally in his native Cork constituency he was still in the race.
He told supporters: “No second thoughts – that’s not my style.”
The 44-year-old said it was his intention to “finish what he started” and added it was “21,000 people that would decide who the next leader of the parliamentary party, not 73” as his rival secured the support of 45 TDS and senators.
A planned rally yesterday was axed by the Cork TD, fuelling rumours he was going to quit the race.
