A huge search operation was launched on Friday afternoon and continued until the heartbreaking discovery yesterday at 10am.

It’s understood the 28-year-old was with his uncle and boat skipper Keith Mcallister when their boat sank close to the shore off Skerries, Co Dublin.

Emergency services managed to pull Keith from the water soon after and he was treated on shore before being rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he is recovering.

Friends posted on Facebook sending their condolences to the Mcallister family and remembered Jamie as a “true gent”.

Samantha Hughes, a neighbour in Mourne View, said: “Skerries has had more than its fair share of tragedies and it’s in these hard times we should remember to hold our loved ones close.

“RIP Jamie Mcallister. You will be missed, thinking of all his family and friends who are suffering at this huge loss, sending love to you all.”

Another tribute read: “My lad went to school with Jamie and was a friend of his.

“I can’t even begin to think what his family are feeling now – so so sad – I am truly sorry for your loss and our thoughts are of you all.”

The community has been left shaken by the news of Jamie’s death but there was also praise for the tireless efforts of the emergency services who tried to save his life.

The RNLI Skerries lifeboat was on the scene within minutes after a local resident, who saw the small trawler capsize, alerted them. Jamie’s body was found around 500 metres from the local pier after the RV Keary, a geological survey boat, reported a reading on their sonar.

Naval ship LE Orla operated as the on-scene coordinator for the search with help from LE Niamh, Air Corps CASA maritime surveillance aircraft, RNLI Lifeboats and the RV Keary as well as the Garda dive team. Local volunteers from Howth, Skerries and Clogherhead were also praised.
