Abedi first constructe­d the detonator, a small switchboar­d, in a workshop at his family home in Fallowfiel­d, Gtr Manchester. He then mixed and primed the device hours in the kitchen and bathroom of the rented flat.

It is believed he combined hydrogen peroxide with another chemical to make a white powder known as Mother of Satan and used a 12-volt battery to power the detonator.

The two high-ranking officers said police knew Abedi’s identity within two hours of the blast. Their statement said: “With this informatio­n officers could begin to establish his movements to try and understand if anyone else was linked or any more attacks planned.”

Gun cops from across the country were deployed to support Greater Manchester Police colleagues.
