The Hollywood couple revealed the break-up in a joint statement in the US on Friday. Issued to Entertainment Today, it read: “With tremen- dous love and respect for each other, and the 18 years we spent together as a couple, we have made the decision to separate. “Our priority will continue to be raising our children as devoted parents and the closest of friends.”
Comic Ben, 51, whose hit films include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Christine, 45, an actress, met on the set of Fox TV pilot Heat Vision and Jack in 1999. They married the following year in Kauai, Hawaii.
The stars have children Ella Olivia, 15, and Quinlin Dempsey, 12. In an interview 10 years ago, Meet The Fockers star Ben said of meeting Christine: “When I met her, I pretty much thought, ‘That’s the person’.
“It was like, ‘Wow, this is a great person. I love her’.”
The couple starred together in comedies including Zoolander, Zoolander 2, Dodgeball, Tropic Thunder and Arrested Development.
In October last year, Ben revealed he had battled prostate cancer in 2014.
And in another interview he said the secret of his successful marriage was “a sense of humour.”
He added: “I think you got to laugh, because after a while, you know, life is life.”
