‘WE’VE HUDD OUR FILL OF HISTORY’

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

TOMMY SMITH has called on David Wagner’s Class of 2017 to carry Huddersfield Town out of the glorious past into a brilliant future.

In 1926, the Terriers became the first club to be crowned England’s champions three seasons in succession.

Tomorrow, against Reading, they will bid to get back in the top flight for the first time in 45 years.

Wing-back Smith said: “The players know about the history, but, as young, ambitions professionals, we are more focused on the here and now.”

Smith (right), who walked away from Manchester City five years ago to pursue regular football, added: “This play-off final is about making new history. That definitely drives us on – 45 years is a long time. “If we can be the players who have given this town something to cheer about, we would love that.” Smith, 25, was airlifted off the pitch to hospital two years ago after he was knocked out during a derby against Leeds.

He said: “I won’t lie, that was scary. It does put everything in perspective.

“I spoke to my mum about this final and she said that most people dream of opportunities like this. I intend to grab this occasion with both hands.”
