Mellor all fuelled up for victory

- BY MIKE WHALLEY

KELVIN MELLOR’S route to Wembley took him from a job in a petrol station via the Europa League.

The Blackpool defender has had a remarkable career – and could add a second League Two play-off promotion to his CV with victory over Exeter today.

Mellor, 26, was picked up by hometown club Crewe nine years ago, while holding down a job as a petrol station attendant.

He helped them beat Cheltenham in the League Two play-off final, five years ago, then Southend in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley, 11 months later.

But his most bizarre experience came when loaned to Icelandic side IBV – and he faced Irish club St Patrick’s Athletic in a 2011 Europa League qualifier.

Mellor said: “We had an Icelandic boss at Crewe, and he sent two players every year for their season in the summer. It was crazy.”

He is desperate to win at Wembley – having been on the losing side with Plymouth in last season’s League Two play-off final against AFC Wimbledon.
