Boro set to make Wagner overture

- COLIN YOUNG

HUDDERSFIELD boss David Wagner has emerged as a shock contender to take over at relegated Middlesbrough.

Garry Monk is top of Boro’s list but the club are awaiting the outcome of tomorrow’s Championship play-off final between Huddersfield and Reading before any firm decision on Aitor Karanka’s longterm successor.

Even if the Terriers win promotion, chairman Steve Gibson could still approach Wagner (above), should former Swansea boss Monk choose a Premier League club for his next job.

Gibson, who has promised extensive funds for his new manager to win the Championship, has taken advice on the new boss from chief exec Neil Bausor. MANCHESTER UNITED are facing competition from Roma for Sweden centre-back Victor Lindelof. United were favourites to sign the 22-year-old star (left), but Benfica want £35million. United offered £25m, and Roma have moved in.
