Zoo goes wild as monkeys make a break

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

TWO cheeky monkeys broke out of an enclosure yesterday – and put their zoo on lockdown.

Visitors were herded into shops and cafes as the adult macaques gave keepers with nets the slip.

One visitor at Marwell Zoo tweeted: “Monkeys escaped – currently hiding out with the giraffes.”

A spokesman for the zoo, in Winchester, Hants, said: “At 12.40pm two of our adult Sulawesi-crested macaques escaped from their island enclosure.

“The two macaques were returned to their home within 10 minutes.

“We’re grateful for the way guests cooperated.”

Visitors stayed indoors for another 20 minutes after reports of another monkey on the loose.

No animals were hurt.
