IRISH POET SHEEHY DIES AS HIS BOAT CAPSIZES AT SPANISH RIVER

A TOP Irish poet has died after the boat he was crewing overturned in Spain.

Danny Sheehy, from West Kerry and also known as Danny an tsithigh or Domhnall Mac Sithigh, was thrown into the water along with three others on Friday.

The incident occurred at the mouth of the River Minho, the border between Spain and northern Portugal. It’s understood that they were approachin­g the shore when the vessel capsized.

All four people on the boat were rescued by emergency services but Mr Sheehy took ill and tragically died.

Other crew members on the boat included lead singer of the Hothouse Flowers Liam O Maonlai, musician Brendan O Beaglaioch and Padraig O Duinnin. They were taken to the local hospital for treatment but are understood not to have sustained serious injury. The four were taking part in Iomramh an Chamino 2017. They had left the Spanish port of La Coruna at the end of May heading for the Portuguese coastline. Sheehy
