Mario Basler put them ahead in the sixth minute and the Germans later hit the woodwork twice. Then, in a stunning finale, came the fightback that summed up United’s trophy-laden season, which had already seen them win the Premier League and the FA Cup.
Substitute Teddy Sheringham scored the equaliser, then set up fellow replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the winner. Both goals came in added time.
