BOBBY ROBSON, THE OLDEST

-

The match was the emphatic vindication of Alex Ferguson’s belief that Manchester United needed four top-line strikers to chase an unprecedented Treble.

The triumph came in added time as Fergie’s two attacking substitutes scored the goals that made United the kings of Europe.

Bayern Munich had also been chasing a Treble.

Mario Basler put them ahead in the sixth minute and the Germans later hit the woodwork twice. Then, in a stunning finale, came the fightback that summed up United’s trophy-laden season, which had already seen them win the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Substitute Teddy Sheringham scored the equaliser, then set up fellow replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the winner. Both goals came in added time.

Eighteen years later, Sheringham provides a compelling insight into United’s historic triumph – and what lay behind it.
