Old spark’s still there
John goes green in his new electric car..at 101
I feel I am dangerous I’ll stop. I had two friends here who both held on and they were really driving by feel.
“What I’m concerned with is that I’m obviously coming to the end of this. It’s a question of being able to get into town and on down to the river for my walks.
“I don’t like driving for the sake of it. I like being able to come to Mass and get down to the park and walk from there.”
He said he dreaded the day he would no longer be able to get
behind the wheel of a car. John added: “I will be very isolated here, myself and the dogs.” Too Old For The Road? talks to pensioners who rely on their cars for their independence but who could face losing their licences in the near future. The show also follows Joan O’rourke, from Co Galway, 86, who travels to court to face a speeding charge.
Terrified she will be put off the road, she says she would have to sell her home and move. But the charge is thrown out.
And Anne Moore, 88, from Co Kildare, said it “would break my heart” to have to give up the car.
Too Old For The Road? is on RTE One on Monday at 9.35pm.
