STAR MARTINA STILL DAZZLES
THE EVERGREEN Martina Hingis was in action in the ladies’ and mixed doubles – exactly 21 years to the day since she broke one of the oldest records in Wimbledon’s history.
Back in 1996, aged just 15 years and 282 days, she became the youngest-ever champion in the tournament’s history, winning the ladies’ doubles with Helena Sukova.
Hingis beat a landmark that stood since 1887 when Lottie Dod lifted the ladies’ crown. Hingis was just three days younger than her predecessor.
The Swiss Miss then went on to enjoy a fine career, winning five singles Grand Slams and 17 in the doubles before retiring – and returning after a six-year break.
And yesterday the 36-year-old was still going strong, with Yung-jan Chan and Jamie Murray in both doubles’ competitions.
