Jerry Towey PARA-CYCLING star Jerry Towey has smashed a mammoth five-hour onthe-spot bike ride to raise €14,000 for a schoolboy battling leukaemia.

The former all-ireland sporting hero teamed up with local businesses for the June event which saw him peddle 176km for 12-year-old Keith Gallagher from Roscommon.

He said: “All the monies raised will be used to relieve the stress of travel and increased expenses incurred during the battle Keith faces.

“It’s been great to have a number of people behind me on this journey working away in the background, whether it’s been collecting the cards, manning collection buckets, negotiating prizes, making sandwiches or managing the online side of things.”

The intense cycle ride was followed by a social event at Duffy’s Four Way, where Mr Towey and special guests provided the entertainment.

He revealed he and other members of the Keith Gallagher Fund committee will be talking to medical experts about understanding the family’s needs in a sensitive way.

One member added: “It has been amazing the way the community has rallied around. We hope Keith and his family will draw strength from this.”
