Tributes after Irishwoman dies climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in charity trek
Bodybuilder’s mission for late father
TRIBUTES have poured in for an Irishwoman who died in Tanzania while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is believed bodybuilder Majella Duffy, from Cork, became ill around 4,000m into her climb on Friday.
She had travelled to the African country last Saturday to scale the mountain in memory of her late father.
The 35-year-old had raised more than €8,000 for the Irish Heart Foundation at the time of her death.
Tributes flooded in yesterday with one pal saying: “I’m actually in shock after just hearing the heart-breaking news.
“RIP Majella Duffy, absolute beauty inside and out.
“Thoughts are with your loved ones tonight xxxxxxxx.”
Fellow bodybuilder Carrie-ann Crowley added: “Very saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Majella Duffy. I was lucky enough to share the stage with this lady twice.
“Beautiful girl and absolutely fabulous physique.
“So so sad. Thoughts and condolences with her family and friends. Xx”
Another touching tribute read: “Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the beautiful Majella Duffy.
“She was beautiful inside and out – thoughtful, friendly, considerate, not a bad word could have been said about her.”
Another friend said the popular sportswoman was “too young to die”.
He added: “RIP Majella Duffy. I got to know you briefly when you won your NIFMA World a couple of years ago and
through Facebook chats, you seemed to be very nice and bubbly and very caring lady. I hope God has great plans for you.”
Adventure holiday travel company Earth’s Edge offered its condolences to Majella’s family.
A spokesman said: “A client of ours passed away on the 14th July 2017 at 8.15am local time while on Kilimanjaro.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with her family.
“We will provide further information on this incident in due course. James and all the team at Earth’s Edge.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the woman’s family.
