An estimated 150,000 racegoers will pass through the turnstiles during the week-long festival at Ballybrit which runs from Monday July, 31, to Sunday, August 6.

But they are warned to allow extra time for their journey and to expect queues due to “more extensive bag and physical search procedures… at all racecourse entrances”.

These include random full body pat downs and bag searches using metal detectors with backpacks and totes larger than A4-size banned. And while buggies are permitted, they too may be subjected to searches.

A Galway Races spokesman said: “Following a review of safety procedures with the relevant authorities and with the safety of our patrons being paramount, increased security measures will be in place. There will be more extensive bag and physical search procedures for 150,000 set to attend Course at Ballybrit all patrons and staff at all racecourse entrances and you will notice a stronger Garda presence.

“It is inevitable access to the racecourse this year will take longer than normal and we would ask patrons for your understanding, patience and co-operation with our security personnel and that you allow sufficient time for entry to the racecourse. “We also ask for your vigilance in relation to security. If you see or hear anything suspicious please report it to one of our stewards or a member of An Garda Siochana on site.”

Ten new armed Garda support units are being established in towns and cities outside Dublin – including one in Galway – to deal with the threat from terrorism.

Meanwhile, it’s estimated €15million will be placed in bets on 52 races over seven days at the track.

New features include a pop-up retail village and Dancing With The Stars finalist Aoibhin Garrihy and TV presenter Baz Ashmawy are among the judges for Best Dressed Lady.
