Battle stations as Game Of Thrones in thrilling return

-

WINTER’S been a long time coming but it’s finally here. Game Of Thrones fans around the globe are counting the hours until its return in the US, with Sky Atlantic following suit tomorrow night.

It’s a bittersweet moment for the faithful because it means there are just 13 instalments of this global phenomenon left. But before we start panicking, let’s have a quick recap.

At the end of season six a white raven was dispatched to Winterfell signifying winter’s arrival.

We know the main threads of the seven-year long tale are about to weave together.

Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen and her assembled army and navy are heading for King’s Landing to reclaim the Iron Throne from Cersei Lanister while in the North, Jon Snow is ready for battle with an army of Wildlings and noble houses backing him.

But there are a number of burning questions that remain:

Will Arya kill Cersei?

The fiercely independent Stark with a kill list to rival Uma Thurman’s has just slit the throat of Walder Frey and baked his sons in a pie – meaning there are only two names left on her list.

Cersei and The Mountain better watch out as the assassin is now a qualified Faceless Man.

What is Petyr Baelish up to?

Bookies shortened odds on Littlefinger to be the first key character to die in season seven but it’s clear he hasn’t abandoned his masterplan to sit on the Iron Throne with Sansa Stark. Aidan Gillen, who plays the conniving ex-brothel keeper and orchestrator of Joffrey’s demise, has hinted at plenty of interaction between the two to come.

Is Samwell Tarly the saviour of

PRINCESS Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Westeros? He left the Night’s Watch last season and after a brief and loveless reunion with his father headed for the Citadel to become a Maester. John Bradley-west, who plays the role, has hinted his actions in season seven could be central to the final outcome. Will the White Walkers storm the Wall? The Wildlings have already proved it’s not impossible to breach security at Castle Black so it’s only a matter of time before the Walkers follow suit.

Will Jon Snow learn of his true ancestry?

He’s been called The Bastard Snow since the first episode but the closing stages of season six confirmed that although that’s true, he’s not Ned Stark’s son.

The theory his dad’s Rhaegar Targaryen, son of the mad king, means he’s not entitled to rule House Stark but could instead have a legitimate claim to the Iron Throne.

We already know – thanks to an unwitting spoiler leaked by a costume designer this week – he meets Dany face to face, so will the truth of his parentage out?

Kit Harington, who plays Snow, said: “Season seven has much more ambition.

“There are less episodes this year, so they spent more money on those episodes so, the whole scale of it is up.”
