Jose: He’ll score goals Reds need

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL in Los Angeles

JOSE MOURINHO is convinced Romelu Lukaku can turn Manchester United from bore-draw specialists into winners.

United had 15 draws in the Premier League last season and scored just 54 goals as they finished sixth, 24 points behind Chelsea.

But Mourinho believes Lukaku is the man who can turn those draws into wins and make United title contenders next season.

The United boss said: “For the Premier League, we need a targetman, which is not Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford.

“We needed a clear No.9, one that is comfortable to play in the box and to play with his back to the defensive line, and we thought Romelu would be a good option.

“What will he bring us? Hopefully, goals. “Normally, players need some time to adapt, but Lukaku has played in the Premier League for the last four or five seasons.

“It will be his first Champions League competition, which was also his main motivation, so the fact we qualified for that may also have played an important role.

“It’s quite a great experience the fact we worked together already for a few months.

“When I was at Chelsea and at United, and he was at Everton, our relationship was always very close, despite not working together.

“He’s intelligent, he’s polite, we always kept in contact and now we’re back together in different moments of his career and mine – and I have no doubts it’s going to work.”

Mourinho has also said it is “possible” that out-of-contract striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 35, could sign a new deal.

He has been recovering from knee surgery at United’s training ground. Mourinho said: “If the decision is to stay and wait until December – he can’t be back until then – why not wait? We are speaking and exchanging ideas.”
