Martial law extended to crush rebels

-

POLITICIANS in the Philippines have voted overwhelmingly to extend marital law in a bid to deal with an Islamist uprising on the island of Mindanao.

Militants linked to Isis have occupied parts of Marawi, a city in the south of the island, since May.

President Rodrigo Duterte said that extending martial law was essential to crush the insurgency.

However, his political critics say it is simply part of a wider power grab.

Mindanao is home to a number of Muslim rebel groups seeking autonomy.

The measure allows the use of the military to enforce law and the detention of people without charge for long periods.

A 60-day martial rule earlier imposed was due to expire yesterday but will now remain in force until December 31.
