DETTORI DU GOOD
FRANKIE DETTORI won the Qatar Stewards’ Cup for the second time in three years when driving 25-1 shot Lancelot Du Lac to victory on the final day of Glorious Goodwood 2017.
The Italian, who gained his first success in the six-furlong cavalry charge aboard Magical Memory two years ago, made a beeline for the far rail on the Dean Ivory-trained seven- year-old, who led from halfway to beat Aeolus by three parts of a length.
“Never at any moment did I think he was going to get beat,” said Dettori (below, celebrating his win).
“Dean gave me confidence. I was drawn 15 but I was able to get across without burning much petrol.”
Crystal Ocean is as short as 4-1 second favourite for the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster on September 16 after justifying his 6-4 favourite status by coming home three-anda-half lengths ahead in the Group 3 Qatar Gordon Stakes.
“We’ve loved him from the early days, he’s a good athlete and we will look at the Leger,” said the colt’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute.
