Baby’s hero rescuer shot dead in Syria

- BY PAUL HOOPER

A HERO who pulled a baby girl from the wreckage of an air strike last year was among seven White Helmets rescuers killed in Syria early yesterday.

Footage of Abu Kifah saving month-old Wahida Ma’artouk reduced BBC journalist Kate Silverton to tears when it was shown on TV last October.

He and six colleagues were shot in cold blood by gunmen who attacked their office in Sarmin, the Syrian civil defence said.

The Uk-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the victims, who were shot in the head, were discovered when the next shift turned up and found their bodies.

The White Helmets are 3,000 volunteers, set up in 2013 to search for victims of air raids in Syria.
