It might sound a bit daft when someone says they have arthritis in their big toe, but I can assure you, it’s agony.
To ease the pain, I had a Cartiva implant fitted in my toe by orthopaedic surgeon Kurt Haendlmayer at Spire Methley Park Hospital in West Yorks.
It is like a jelly bean and functions in a similar way to natural cartilage, cushioning the area where the toe and foot meet. It allows your toe to move naturally, whereas having the bone fused does not.
I was a bit apprehensive – it seemed a bit “Tomorrow’s World” for me. But it has been fantastic. Now I am virtually pain free, I can run, kneel and drive.
