Michy Batshuayi ahead of Morata in the 3-2 defeat by Burnley.

But the 24-year-old Spain star changed the game when introduced and was unlucky not to score a second goal on his Premier League debut.

Conte said: “Morata didn’t play regularly with Real Madrid last season because he was behind Karim Benzema.

“Usually, when you don’t play regularly, you sometimes lose your performance, sometimes your quality in your physical condition. You need a bit of time to recover this. We want Morata to play regularly for Chelsea.”

Conte looked calm in the eye of the storm created by Diego Costa, a lack of recruitment, suspensions and last week’s defeat as he prepared for today’s game.

But, despite the pressure he is under, he says he would love to become the first manager in more than three decades to reign at the club for more than four years.

He added: “I want to break this bad record. I must be positive. I hope to stay in this club for many years.

“It means you have the possibility to work with the same players, to improve these players and then, year by year, improve your squad and your quality.”

And he also knows what Pochettino and everyone involved with Spurs will be feeling as they kick off their season at Wembley, while the new White Hart Lane stadium is built, having moved stadiums during his days as a player with Juventus.

Conte said: “Yes, it’s not the same when you don’t play in your stadium. It’s different.

“But if you want to have another good step to improve the club, you must have this situation.”
