Code-cracker Turing says in lost letters: I hate America

- BY JOHN KELLY

Benedict as Turing ALAN Turing had a hatred of America according to newly discovered letters from the computer genius.

The collection, from 1949 until his suicide in 1954, were in a store room at Manchester University.

In them, the man who cracked the Nazi Enigma code for the Allies in the Second World War turns down a 1953 offer to attend a conference in the US.

Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, wrote: “I would not like the journey and I detest America.”

Prof Jim Miles, who found the yellowing letters in a cabinet, said: “It is a mystery why they had been filed away. No one knew they even existed.” Gina Miller
