Rioting after guru’s rape conviction
HUNDREDS of Indian troops took to the streets yesterday as rioting followed the rape conviction of a religious leader.
It is believed at least 30 people were killed on Friday during demonstrations in the northern city of Panchkula after the ruling against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
Those who died, many of whom were shot, were understood to be followers of the self-styled guru.
The religious leader was found guilty of raping two women at the headquarters of his sect, the Dera Sacha Sauda, in 2002.
Barricades have been placed at entry points to the premises, near the town of Sirsa, where around 100,000 people are believed to be sheltering.
