POETS HOUSE ELY, CAMBS

-

The rural Cambridgeshire city on the River Great Ouse is pretty as a postcard. Standing proud off a cobbled street right in the heart of the historic area is one of the most luxurious places to stay in the city. With only 21 rooms, the sense of exclusivity is noted the second you step in. A cosy but classy reception inter-joins a lavish cocktail lounge, but the highlight is the bedrooms themselves – especially the huge copper bathtubs. Positioned in front of a window at the foot of a super comfortable king bed, you can take in breathtaking views of the Cathedral while having a long soak.

It’s not often dishes look as incredible as they taste, but head chef Daniel Perjesi produces an exception, and for an affordable

price. The Dining Room, which is where breakfast and dinner are served, has a three-course menu for €32. It’s worth trying the smoked eel terrine (Ely is famed for its eels), which is mild, delicate and in no way slimy. Also, you don’t know it yet, but you haven’t lived until you’ve tried the poached rhubarb and fennel sorbet. At breakfast there’s fancy handmade granola, and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on fluffy brioche. Room service is also available – and with rooms so divine, who could blame you?

Ely Cathedral is a three-minute walk away and, for a small fee, you can take a tour of the Octagon Tower at the top for spectacular views. Oliver Cromwell’s house is a two-minute stroll and a great place to visit for grown-ups and children. If you’re in luck with the sun, be sure to take a walk along the riverside and stop for a cream tea.

B&B rates including breakfast start at €195. EMMA JONES
