- BY RACHEL BURNETT

POPE Francis has paid tribute to former Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-o’connor.

He said he was, “deeply saddened” to learn that the 85-year-old had died after a battle with cancer.

The pontiff sent a message of condolence to Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the current Archbishop of Westminster.

He stated: “I hasten to offer my heartfelt condolences to you and to the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Westminster. I willingly join you in commending his noble soul to the infinite mercies of God our heavenly Father.”

Cardinal Murphy-o’connor, who became leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales in 2000 before retiring from his role in 2009, was admitted to hospital last month.

The cleric, whose parents were from Cork, died “peacefully” surrounded by his family and friends at 3.15pm on Friday, according to Cardinal Nichols.
