Man loses life after plunging into city canal

A MAN in his 50s has died after falling into a Dublin canal.

Gardai were passing the Ninth Lock in Clondalkin shortly after 3am yesterday when they spotted him in difficulty in the water.

Emergency services were called and several officers went into the canal to rescue him.

He was taken to Tallaght Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident is being treated as an accident.

It is believed the man, from Ballyfermo­t, had been socialisin­g beside the canal shortly before the incident.
