Be Berry nice to Prue says telly pal Mary

- BY EMMA BRANKIN

GREAT British Bake Off star Paul Hollywood has revealed how former co-star Mary Berry ordered him to look after new judge Prue Leith. Mary, 82, gave the instruction after watching her replacement on Channel 4. Paul, 51, told TV’S Jonathan Ross last night that he and Mary have stayed in touch even though she chose not to move to C4 after it snatched Bake Off from the BBC. He said on Ross’s chat show: “We have swapped texts and emails. She has not told me directly what she thinks of the new show. She has just said ‘Prue is brilliant. Look after her’. That is it. She is a class act. They both are.” Mary and Prue, 77, go back a long way and were pictured working together as long ago as 1974. Also on the chat show was Noel Fielding, 44, who hosts Bake Off with Sandi Toksvig, 59. The quirky comic said of being hired: “I was 549th on the list, a bit of a wild card. I got the call . . . I was in my coffin. I did not have much on and I like a quiche, so why not? “I had to do a little chemistry test with Sandi Toksvig to see if we liked each other – and we did, straight away. We made love immediately and she is a lesbian and I am a lesbian, so . . .”
