‘TOON RUCK STILL WEIRD’

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

THE on-pitch scrap between Newcastle team-mates Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer in 2005 is still one of the most infamous moments in Premier League history.

And when the Toon stars came to blows, it was Gareth Barry, then of Aston Villa, who leapt in.

“I remember it well,” Barry said, laughing. “The game was going on and I could hear them arguing... it was slowly getting more and more heated.

“My mind was going from ball to what was going on, ball to what was going on... then, all of a sudden, they’ve come together and I’m the closest player to it.

“I thought, ‘You’ve got to do the right thing here and get involved’. I still see pictures of it all the time. It’s weird that I was in the middle of it.”
