Police try to stop big vote

-

MORE than 1,300 schools set up as polling stations were sealed off by Spanish police yesterday.

Tens of thousands are expected to vote in today’s banned Catalonia independence referendum.

Authorities in Madrid, fearing civil disturbance, sent thousands of police to the region to stop the vote.

They have been ordered to clear schools occupied by activists, including parents and children who remained in the buildings after lessons on Friday.
