Talk TV Fans are happy as Larry at comedy anti-hero’s return

-

THE return of Curb Your Enthusiasm after a sixyear hiatus has to be one of the most eagerlyawaited comebacks in the history of television comedy.

The hype surrounding Larry David and crew for the past few weeks has been phenomenal, and tomorrow night viewers will get to see for themselves if the show still has its infamous cringe factor.

Creator and star Larry David is typically nonplussed about its return. When asked about the six-year break he merely shrugged and said: “I left, I did nothing, I returned.”

But fans are counting their lucky stars that the comedy icon did – and counting the hours until the first new episode of the cult show airs on Sky Atlantic.

The opener, entitled Foisted, follows Larry as he tries to rid himself of an inept assistant, offends Jeff ’s barber and gets into hot water over a new project. Other episodes include Running With Bulls and The Accidental Text On Purpose.

All the familiar faces are back including Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman, JB Smoove, Bob Einstein, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.

The list of cameos is impressive from Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston to Lauren Graham, Jimmy Kimmel, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Begley Jnr, Casey Wilson, Andrea Savage, Elizabeth Perkins and – wait for it – Judge Judy Sheindlin.

The season trailer shows a series of trivial everyday annoyances causing Larry’s blood to reach boiling point.

These range from not being able to open the pump on a new soap dispenser to someone crying too loudly at a funeral. He also flips his lid over a shoelace snapping, his secretary taking time off sick (for

CALLING THE SHOTS: constipation), being sprayed by a perfume saleswoman without his say-so and a court appearance. A therapy session with Bryan Cranston, aka Breaking Bad’s Walter White playing the therapist, is most certainly not to be missed. Earlier this week a tongue-in-cheek David took to the couch on talk show Late Night with Seth Larry David & JB Smoove in new series Meyers and revealed how fans are crestfallen when they meet him in person.

He said: “When they meet me they’re so disappointed, so quickly. It’s unbelievable, two minutes in the disappointment is etched on their faces.

“I’m very indecisive. When I had an apartment in New York and I didn’t have any money I couldn’t decide what to eat.

“I would go to the corner and stand there for 20 minutes looking at the five restaurants I could afford.

“I got so overwhelmed I would turn around and go David Mcintosh home. I couldn’t even pick a restaurant.”

What sets David apart from most other comedy actors is that he is not afraid to tell it as it is and doesn’t care who that might end up offending in the process.

He said: “I don’t think the fans who watch the show want me to be politically correct or do anything differently.

“So I haven’t done anything differently. It’s the same.” We’re glad to hear it. Curb Your Enthusiasm returns tomorrow night on Sky Atlantic at 10pm.
