Five surgeries still shut after dental ‘mix-up’

of 16 patients have sought medical advice following the incident.

In five cases parents confirmed their child had mild symptoms and required no action.

They were contacted a second time on Friday to ask if assistance was required but again the HSE was told the children were fine and required no treatment. It is known two children presented at an A&E while two others attended Shannondoc, the out-of-hours service.

One other child was brought to their own doctor for treatment.

It’s understood some children complained of mild irritation or burning sensations in their mouths.

The HSE said: “Early indication­s, yet to be confirmed, suggest a drain cleaning product got mixed with the water used during treatment when normally the water would be mixed with an approved dental product.”

HSE Mid West chief officer Bernard Gloster said: “I want to apologise for upset caused to the children and their families.
