1925: Eileen Joel became the first female jockey to win an ‘open’ race in the four-mile Town Plate at Newmarket on Hogier. The race had five women in a field of eight.

1996: England Under-21s’ Euro qualifier against Poland at Molineux was delayed by two hours because of a suspect package, which turned out to be a sandwich.

2007: Crystal Palace sacked boss Peter Taylor after collecting just 10 points from their opening 10 matches in the Championsh­ip.

2010: The Premier League announced it had given approval to New England Sports Ventures’ proposed takeover of Liverpool, which was later completed.

2016: Johanna Konta became the first British woman in 32 years to make the top 10 of the world rankings after beating Madison Keys in the semi-final of the China Open.
