Islamic State about to lose Syrian base

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

IS forces ISLAMIC State forces are on the verge of being wiped out in their Syrian stronghold of Raqqa, following the surrender of 100 jihadist fighters.

The Us-led coalition said the last 200 to 300 militants are cut off from their leadership on a small sliver of land, armed only with pistols, a few machine guns and little ammo.

A spokesman for the Us-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said the final battle for the city could take hours or days.

Mustafa Bali added: “They’re still able to fight but will no longer determine the fate of the battle.”

Hundreds of terrified civilians have fled.

But US officials said an estimated 4,000 civilians remained trapped in the city taken by IS in 2014. The monster’s face
