Commuters are ordered off the metro by terrorists in Below the Surface when one of the hostage takers agrees to a TV interview and ends it with “howdy partner” – Ahmad’s taunt in the Middle East ordeal a year earlier.

The second episode sees Naja, the journalist fired for her unauthorised interview, start a national fundraising campaign to raise the hostages’ ransom.

In the cell where they are being held, have-a-go hero Adel Rasul tries to sneak up on one of the captors but is talked down by the others. He is later found dead on the tracks after an online interview goes horribly wrong, sparking the fury of the terrorists.

Philip is told they are releasing a hostage, but the SWAT team find a body bag on a cart. Inside lies Adel. Dead.

This edge-of-your-seat drama takes no prisoners – unlike the plot it centres on.

Below the Surface airs on RTE 2 on Friday at 10pm.
