Benfica will be asking for Mour

MANCHESTER UNITED will face a Benfica side with a point to prove to their fans on Tuesday after a miserable start to their Champions League campaign.

Having lost their Group A opener 2-1 at home to CSKA Moscow, the Portuguese giants were then thumped 5-0 by Basel.

And former Benfica star Scott Minto knows well that those results will have left supporters hurting.

He said: “What we’re talking about is one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

“They might not be one of the best teams but this is a proud club in a proud country and the biggest club in Portugal by far.

“The fans were fantastic when I was there but you got the feeling when things didn’t go well you didn’t want to go out. Not because you’d get any trouble, but because you’d feel you’d let them down.

They’re so passionate. On my first day of pre-season training there were 5,000 watching and we had one pre-season game with 80,000 there.

“It’s a massive, massive club and to have the kind of start they have had in the Champions League quite simply is not good enough.”

Statistics released last week revealed only Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus have scored more goals in UEFA competitions than Benfica.

Real have 1,104 goals in 520 matches, the only side to average more than two goals a game (2.12), while Benfica have 655 goals in 405 (1.62 per fixture). Mourinho’s (above) United are ninth with 607 in 344.
