After undergoing a six month refurbishm­ent this four-star hotel has to be stayed in to be believed. The décor and ambiance are five-star boutique luxury. My husband and I stayed in one of the Grand Master Suites which overlooked some of the 26 acres of grounds; a perfect view while we enjoyed our morning coffee. These suites feature super king-size beds, giant bathtubs, power showers and Nespresso machines.

The Oak Room restaurant has two AA Rosettes and the menu features classics with the chef’s own twist. We started with pan-fried scallops with cauliflowe­r couscous and curry sauce. For our mains I opted for the sirloin steak while my husband went for the herb crusted english rump of lamb. Both were picture perfect and the portion sizes were just right. Then I had the sticky toffee pudding while he chose the chocolate brownie. We shared a nice bottle of merlot and were in food and drink heaven. The next morning we were blessed with sunshine so we enjoyed breakfast on the terrace. Again, this was a triumph – varied and plentiful with waiting staff who really cannot do enough for you.
