WE WON’T CAVE VOWS DARREN

- BY ORLA BANNON

La Rochelle v Ulster Today, 3.15pm

DARREN CAVE believes an Ulster win against La Rochelle today would be their greatest ever victory in France.

Ulster went years without being able to get the job done on French soil but it all changed in 2013 with a dogged 9-8 victory over Castres.

Since then they’ve beaten Montpellier, Oyonnax and Toulouse and although La Rochelle are in the European Champions Cup for the first time, they are rising fast and pulled off a bonus-point win at Harlequins last week. Cave (inset) has been hugely impressed and thinks a win today would top the lot.

“It’s one of the biggest asks and I think it would be one of the biggest wins,” he said.

“But if you’re a professional player these are the opportunities you want and a chance to really put our season on the map. It has been a stop-start season for myself but as a team we’ve played pretty well. “We’ve gone with an experienced side this week with a lot of caps and years. We have guys who can deal with a hostile environment.” Along with Tommy Bowe and Andrew Trimble, Cave has been a mainstay of the Ulster back-line for years but hasn’t been first choice this season. “The amount of quality backs we have is frightening. It brings out the best in you because obviously you want to play as much as possible,” said Cave.
