Van Dyke: An Irishman the accent culprit

- BY JAMES DESBOROUGH

Dick Van Dyke ACTOR Dick Van Dyke has apologised for his shocking Cockney accent as chimney sweep Bert in 1964 film Mary Poppins.

But he’s blamed co-star Julie Andrews for it.

The 91-year-old star has a cameo role in movie Mary Poppins Returns with Emily Blunt playing the nanny.

And Dick says he worked with a dialect coach to get his English accent spot on this time.

Collecting a BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Award for TV Excellence, he said: “I am sorry for that accent.

“I had one hour with a coach at my house, an Irishman called Pat Mahoney. But it was an all British crew and they all said nothing.

“I blame Julie Andrews as much as anyone.” Jack Letts, 21
